Maria Dolores ‘Lola’ Martin Bermudo is a group leader at CABD studying mechanisms regulating cell shape changes and cell migration. The prestigous EMBO organization selected Lola Martin Bermudo as a new member. She belongs to a group of 63 leading scientists selected with the lifetime honour of EMBO Membership recognizing their exceptional findings in the life sciences.
Dr. Lola Martin Bermudo
Lola Martin Bermudo started her scientific career at Centro de Biología Molecular Severo Ochoa, under the supervision of Dr. F. Jiménez. Lola during her PhD started to use studied the embryonic development in particular the morphogenesis of the nervous system using Drosophila as a model system. Then, she worked with Nick Brown at the Gurdon Institute (Cambridge, UK) for her post doctoral training when she started to study how cells and extracellular matrix interaction regulate embryonic morphogenesis. After she got established as an independent researcher at the Department of Physiology Development and Neuroscience (Cambridge University) where Lola focused her studies on cell migration and invasion. In 2000, Lola Martin Bermudo obtained a CSIC’s PI position at Institute of Parasitology and Biomedicine “López-Neyra” (IPBLN) (Granada). From 2009, Lola’s group is at Centro Andaluz de Biologia del Desarrollo and her group belongs to the “Decision-Making in Cell Collectives” María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence.
Martin Bermudo’s career results from hard work and incorporation of new techniques that results in scientific novelties. Lola collaborates with several groups, such as Acaimo Gonzalez Reyes, Isabel Palacios and Jose Pastor -Pareja, to unravel biological questions that turned in great publications.
Lola Martin Bermudo was selected as a EMBO member together with 2 scientists based in Spain : Pere Roca-Cusachs, from Instituto de Bioingeniería de Cataluña (IBEC) and Universidad de Barcelona, and also Guillermina López Bendito, from Instituto de Neurociencias, UMH-CSIC, of San Juan de Alicante.
