Jose Luis Gomez Skarmeta is a group leader at CABD studying functional genomics to unravel development, evolution and human genetic diseases. He is one of the founders group leaders of the CABD.
He has pioneered the integration of developmental biology, epigenetic and chromatin dynamics to understand the mechanisms of gene regulation during development, evolution and disease. His laboratory uses top-notch technology, such as ATAC-seq, RNA-seq and chromosome conformation capture techniques to investigate the evolution of cis-regulatory landscapes in vertebrate and invertebrate genomes.
His research and publications reflect Gomez-Skarmeta’s hard work and ability of adjust to the technical innovations of the fields of genomics and developmental biology. He promoted synergies between groups to solve biological questions that resulted in great publications.
In 2017, he has been awarded the ERC Advanced grant “EvoLand” and the “Carmen and Severo Ochoa” Molecular Biology Spanish award. In addition, he received the prestigious Marine Biological Laboratory Whitman Center Investigator Reseach Award in 2015 and 2018. He is Scientific Director of the “Decision-Making in Cell Collectives” María de Maeztu Unit of Excellence. He was selected recently as EMBO Member.
The Director of the Maria de Maeztu Unit: Dr. Jose Luis Gomez Skarmeta
Gomez-Skarmeta was selected as a EMBO member together with 2 scientists based in Spain : James Sharpe from EMBL-Barcelona and Miguel Torres from CNIC-Madrid. Here you can check the publication of all the elected EMBO members 2019.
